    Exercise 1:
    1. IOC stands for the International Olympic Committee.
    2. WHO stands for the World Health Organization.
    3. PhD stands for Doctor of Philosophy.
    4. BBC stands for the British Broadcasting Corporation.
    5. J.F. Kennedy: J.F. stands for John Fitzgerald.
    6. UK stands for the United Kingdom.

    Exercise 2:
    Finish these sentences with ideas of your own:
    1. I can't stand people who talk to themselves when I'm trying to study in the library.
    2. I can't stand the way some people think negatively about almost everything.
    3. I can't stand being forced to sit and listen to people's mobile phone conversations when I'm travelling on the train.
    4. I can't stand the sight of mozuku (a type of seaweed eaten in Japan).
    5. I can't stand the smell of nori (another type of seaweed, often used in rolled sushi), but I don't mind the smell of natto (fermented soya beans) - TRUE.

    Note:
    In British English PhD is usually written without dots. In American English, it is written as Ph.D. (e.g. Deborah Tannen Ph.D. is one of the world's best known linguists)
