Words to be careful with: popular and play

In this week's lesson, I would like to look at two words that sometimes cause problems for students. Look at the examples below and decide what is wrong with the parts in red.

    1. A: There are 3 people called Suzuki in my office.
B: Oh, yes. Suzuki is a very popular name in Japan.

    2. Teenage Student: How do you say Otafuku-kazei‚¨‘½•Ÿ•—Ž×jin English?
      Teacher: Mumps.
Teenage Student: Mumps? This week mumps is very popular in my school.
      Teacher: Eh?

    3. A: Did you do anything interesting last weekend?
B: Yes, I went to Nagano and I played skiing.

    4. Teacher: What do you like to do in your free time?
Adult student: Sometimes I read a book and sometimes I play with friends.
