Exercise 1
Use an appropriate word from the ABDUCT / ABDUCTION etc. group to fill in the blanks below:
- Several Japanese citizens were abducted to North Korea in the late 1970s and early 1980s..
- There are still many unanswered questions concerning the abduction of Japanese citizens by North Korean agents.
- Five of the abductees returned to Japan in 2002. Several others are said to have died in North Korea.
- Many people in Japan want King Jong Il to punish the abductors.
Exercise 2
Use an appropriate word from the DESERT / DESERTER etc. group to fill in the blanks below:
- According to U.S. military reports, Charles Robert Jenkins deserted in 1965 and started a new life in North Korea.
- Some people believe that Jenkins is an abductee, not a deserter .
- The United States considers desertion to be a serious crime.
Of course, we hope that many of the unanswered questions about the abductions will be answered soon. My thoughts are especially with Ms. Soga, who has shown a very brave face throughout the last few days. We hope she'll be able to meet her family soon.
